The fascinating story of why I created the Margarita Shack and the world’s best tasting low calorie powdered margarita mix in 1999.
During my freshman year (1981) at Texas A & M I was introduced to Jimmy Buffett via the “Son of a Son of a Sailor” and “Changes in Attitudes… Changes in Latitudes” albums by a baseball teammate of mine and his gorgeous girlfriend.
They both grew up partying and listening to Coast101 on Corpus Christi’s North Padre Island.
“Cheeseburger in Paradise” “Margaritaville” “A Pirate Looks at Forty” “He Went to Paris” “Grapefruit Juicy Fruit” “Why Don’t We Get Drunk & Screw.”
It all sounded like a good idea to me at the time.
Well about ten years later I was invited to the old Starplex Amphitheater in Dallas, TX to see the aforementioned Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band.
Before I had the chance to say otherwise, we were all drinking margaritas and wearing grass skirts and funny hats while singing all the songs we knew by heart in the parking lot before the show.
With that being said, you may be wondering what it all has to do with the Margarita Shack?
Well let me explain.
Around 1996 I started getting perturbed when I had to pay $7.00-$8.00 dollars for a top shelf margarita that tasted like old sweet & sour mix and woke me up with heartburn in the middle of the night.
At the time I was a storm chaser, insurance restoration consultant and independent insurance adjuster and I was eating out every night at the best restaurants in the biggest cities in the USA.
Dallas, Houston, Austin, Denver, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Chicago, Minneapolis, Baltimore, Washington DC, Virginia Beach, Atlanta, Nashville, Louisville etc and I was drinking a lot of margaritas and spending a lot of money doing so.
Therefore, I started interviewing every bartender I could find from Key West to Honolulu and I tried every combination of ingredients you could possibly think of for about two years.
Then one day as fate would have it, I failed my way to success at a pool party during the summer of 2001.
It was then and there that I came up with the winning formula.
From there it took me a couple of months to figure out the packaging and to print some t-shirts that I took to another Jimmy Buffett concert in downtown Minneapolis at the Target Center on November 10, 2001.
I sat on the tailgate of my truck in the parking lot and I sold a few Margarita Shack T-Shirts and gave away the margarita mix.
Then I ran home and figured out how to open a store on Yahoo! and I was amazed that we started getting orders from all over the World in December of 2001.
As hard as that was to believe, it seems even harder to believe today that some people are using our name and trying to copy our mix, among other dastardly deeds.
I guess imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery?
Be that as it may, I still find it even more ironic that sixteen years later we are still proudly serving what many refer to as “The World’s Finest Low Calorie Powdered Margarita Mix” at the Margarita Shack.
Today the Margarita Shack could be described as an “Online State of Mind” and I am very humbled and still very grateful to share my journey with you all today.
